Im Glad We Can Work Together Again.
I don't really do a lot of cocky-publicity online. Perhaps it's function of my British nature that, whilst I sympathize the clear benefits, I would much rather others advocate for my work than for me to practice it. And if they don't, well I merely must practice meliorate! For in one case though, I am breaking rank and opting to give myself a little LinkedIn pat on the dorsum.
I recently kicked off a couple of projects with teams that I have worked with earlier and I was struck by the wave of positive responses I received from them:
- "Information technology's great to exist working with you again!"
- "After working with yous before, I am happy that this important piece of work is in your hands"
- "We are so glad and relieved to accept you working on this"
This led me to accept a pause and appreciate the position I am in and the nifty client relationships that I have. As I reflected further, more than thoughts came to me around the journeying I have been on, so I decided to capture these in this article.
Ivy Leaf Innovation is a new business, started in Jan 2018. It's called Ivy Leaf considering ivy always finds a way through. That really sums upwardly my arroyo to my work; drop me into the toughest of projects and I volition find a way through to clarity, meaning and action. Or in others words and to quote one of my closest clients "Hayley I tin can rely on you and you get shit done!"
When I kicked things off in Jan, it was a daunting prospect to say the to the lowest degree. You know the story… build your career in a large Global arrangement and so eventually leave to start upward on your own. Not an easy conclusion. I loved my chore and my visitor were incredibly supportive of my career, just sometimes you have to make a leap and that is what I did. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't wondered if I would brand it and if I was at all expert plenty to practise this.
Half-dozen months in and I haven't sat yet for a moment, delivering a varied portfolio of challenging and rewarding projects for my clients. I had cipher desire to fix a large agency at this stage. My two primary objectives when setting upwards my concern were:
i) Do work that I love and tin can do really well.
two) Have more flexibility to exist effectually for my immature children.
That's it. Elementary.
I mensurate myself on this every solar day. Being clear on what success means to me has been the toughest boxing and also the biggest triumph of this whole journey and then far.
With this in mind, I gear up up Ivy Leaf based on a network model. This ways that I focus on the piece of work where I bring the best value and then use my network when projects require extra resources or skills that I do not have. It's mutual from all sides. I become to practise the work I love and that I am expert at with the maximum possible flexibility; my network receive work from me and I from them and the client gets the all-time dream team on every project. Outcome.
I am fortunate to take worked with an amazing grouping of agency partners from the beginning of my career, agencies who are at the top of their game and as well lovely to piece of work with and have a beer with! They accept supported me in different ways throughout my career and more recently in setting upwards my business; going above and across to aid me and for this I am and volition always be eternally grateful.
The focus of my work is design and innovation management. I aid companies work out why, where and how they need to innovate. I help them to define and communicate their strategies, to interpret innovation objectives into pattern projects and lead teams through the forepart end of the innovation procedure.
Another critical aspect of my piece of work is adequacy development, an area that I am incredibly passionate about. Afterwards starting my career not knowing what to call myself, in a job where I had to fight for every opportunity because people didn't go what I did and find means to get the development I needed, I feel a strong duty to pay it forward.
From when I led an in-house team through to the work I practice now, I strive to find ways to make development meaningful and actionable to the individual within the context in which they work; translating generic macro evolution competencies into something that means something to them in their job with the coaching to follow through. The effect? Visible, meaningful progress and individuals with increased conviction that go on to achieve bigger and improve things. That definitely counts as work that I love.
Information technology's not all been plain sailing though, in that location accept of course been things that I have institute challenging. It's hard not having and IT section to call up when I demand them, and I really don't bask business admin. It's a small cost to pay for the broader benefits.
On a deeper level, the biggest shift for me has been in adjusting to not being the internal decision maker. When I worked in-house, I would atomic number 82 global and regional innovation strategy programs, liaising straight with central stakeholders and setting the direction of the work. That is unlike now, whilst I take very strong customer relationships that sometimes mistiness the boundaries betwixt being internal and external, it is different and that has taken a little getting used to. The temptation is e'er there to go dorsum and who knows perchance one day I volition. For at present, I keep coming dorsum to my two objectives to guide me whenever opportunities come my way.
I'yard positive nigh entering into the side by side vi months of this journey. I accept so much thinking that I desire to share, I but need to find the right fashion to practise information technology! Stay tuned for that.
And to the teams that I am working with now, information technology'south really cracking to piece of work with you again!
